My Dogs Lip Is Peeling

The Brest Fortress (Brestskaya Krepost)

The Brest Fortress (2010)

The story begins on June 21, 1941. A warm summer evening, the young cadet Afimov Alexander, a member of the military band of the garrison at Brest, enjoy the peaceful life of the barracks. However, only a day later, the Germans by surprise attack, surrounding the citadel of Brest, and initiating an intense assault that hits the fierce defense of the Russian soldiers. During the following days will witness Afimov except for the heroic resistance position against enemy attack, a defense led by three officers: the commander Pyotr Gavrilov , Commissioner Efim Fomin, and Lieutenant Andrey Kizhevatov , determined to face the Germans until the last breath.

The siege of the fortress of Brest was one of the fiercest fighting of those who fought during the initial phase Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the USSR by the German Wehrmacht . The citadel of Brest was an old Russian fort S. XIX on the shores of Rio Bug , who had been occupied by the Germans after the invasion of Poland in 1939, but returned to Russian hands under the terms of the Molotov - Ribbentrop pact to partition Poland. In 1941, the position, located on the axis of advance of Army Group Centre was one of the key border goals Barbarossa . At the beginning of the German invasion, the garrison of the citadel was about 3,500 men including soldiers, border guards and members of the NKVD.

The Germans thought they could capture the position quickly, but the initial assault was rejected by the fierce resistance of the defenders, well barricaded behind the thick walls of the fortifications. In the end, the fortress withstood the siege for 8 days (22 to June 30, 1941) and capture cost the Wehrmacht casualties some 1,500 dead and wounded, in addition to having to resort to intensive support the Luftwaffe to reduce the tenacious Russian defenders. Thus, the siege of Brest became a paradigm of resistance of the Red Army during the first weeks of war, reason why in 1965 the Soviet government decided to grant the honorary name citadel "Heroic Strength , creating in the place a museum memorial to the defenders of Brest. The project of bringing the story of the siege of Brest to the cinema has had a budget of $ 7 million and was funded through the studios co-production between Russia and Belarus, with significant participation of the Belarusian state television, which provided most of the money needed for the shoot.

course The Brest Fortress is to save the memory and pay tribute to the courage of the defenders of the fort, most of whom died in battle or were captured by the Nazis after the surrender of it. The film starts showing an excellent staging, which highlights the careful reconstruction of indoor and outdoor stages, a very elegant atmosphere, and a perfect military props, including the appearance of various German cars that look authentic Panzer III World War II tanks. In addition, it should be noted the superb quality of the picture, coming round the outstanding level of technical section of the film.

However, coming to appreciate the narrative, can not say that the story development scratched the same level as the technical aspects. This is because the movie takes from the first time a clear and unequivocal patriotic tone when recounting the facts, leaving little room for interpretation of the viewer: this is a story of "good" (the Russians) versus bad (the Germans). Personally I missed any mention of the prospect of the battle from the other side, even if only a secondary, but to complement the Soviet point of view about the battle.

Moreover, the film certainly does not suffer from lack of action, and that over three quarters of the footage is devoted to show action and fighting scenes, with brief interludes between them. But for that same reason, the discourse is in a very background and development of the central characters is rather schematic. As for the performances, I must say that the performers met without great fanfare in their respective roles, on the other hand, are rather stereotyped and not much room left to showcasing the actors. However, we must recognize that the action scenes are generally very well filmed, with hyper-realistic visual stamp that is customary in the latest war production, which partly offset the overly patriotic tone of the story and the lack balance between the discursive and the war film.

In conclusion, The Brest Fortress is a title that provides a very interesting battle scenes of remarkable visual bill. However, from the narrative point of view, relies on formulas and positions already far exceeded today. Despite this, surely appeal to fans of war movies for their good work on the technical and recall one of the great battles of World War II.
