Boys of St. Petri (Drengene fra Sankt Petri)

The Boys of St. Petri (1991)

The story begins in Denmark in the summer of 1942. brothers Lars and Gunnar Baltrup are two young men from a rich family who, along with other fellow students from the school of St. Petri, form a youth resistance group that engages in acts against the occupying forces, which in principle only reach the category of hooliganism. However, things get complicated when she meets Lars Otto Hvidmann , a young man of humble origins who joins the group, providing weapons stolen from the Germans. This will from that moment, the group undertake authentic missions of sabotage, raising the danger of their activities.

With Boys of St. Petri , the Danish director Soren Kragh-Jacobsen adapted for the screen the true story of a small resistance group formed by young students of the school of St. Petri, whose activities sabotage in the summer of 1942 and subsequent imprisonment in Aalborg, aroused the conscience of the Danish society, which had hitherto accepted without question the German occupation. On this basis, Kragh-Jacobsen builds an interesting story about a maverick and idealistic men who built up an enormous value to rebel, not only against the occupation and the humiliation of his country, but also against apathy of their elders, who accepted without protest the new status quo . In this sense, the story combines the typical elements of the film on the resistance, with those of other films about youth rebellion, and in this respect clearly shows the influence of a title above as The Dead Poets Society , particularly evident in the section on the emotional outcome of the story.

Apart from the above, the film has several respects quite estimable, starting with the good performances of the young cast of leading actors, who can provide most naturally to their respective roles. I also liked the ease of the narrative, and the neat look of the film, including a notable work of photography and an elegant atmosphere that can move the viewer at the time that is portrayed on the screen. Among the less bright, mainly it should be noted that the movie fails to deepen on the personal aspect of the protagonists, or the motivations that drive them to act as they do. Instead, the story prefers to focus on describing the acts of sabotage carried out by boys, but without giving it a more human background to them. For this reason, the character development is too schematic and insufficient. A pity, because this has been more careful look of the script, we would have been to a great movie.

Nevertheless, we must recognize that The Boys of St. Petri is a more than worthy Scandinavian production on the theme of resistance, and offers a pretty story fun to follow for the spectator. A movie not quite round, but it quite estimable and well-crafted formal and visual. Recommended.
